A new national policy on domestic airline services gets underway

Sri Lanka will be introducing a new national policy on domestic airline services focusing attention on the improvement of domestic air travel, maintenance, promotion and encourage new domestic airports.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil aviation has been directed to devise the national policy on domestic air services including open sky policy and presented it to the Cabinet Committee on Economic management as soon as possible. .

In a bid to attract increased tourist generating activities aero sports would be looked at keenly while the opening of the Southern skies has already been declared.

Plans are underway to expand this policy to other areas as well. Infrastructure development of airports would be carried out by drawing the relevant Airport Master Plans for all airports.

South Asia is a fast growing region with a growing middle class and Sri Lanka must look at undertaking similar liberalization with other South Asian member states to forge deeper trade, investment and cultural linkages in the interest of further unleashing the potential of the domestic economy.(LI NEWS)
