Several undergraduates, who were involved in a protest against South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM)...... yesterday, were arrested while some were hospitalized.
Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) Convener Lahiru Weerasekara told Ceylon Today that five students were arrested, but they were not aware to which police station those students were taken.
Thousands of university students were marching towards the Presidential Secretariat yesterday demanding the government to abolish SAITM. In order to disperse the agitated students, the Police were forced to use tear gas and water cannon resulting in several students having to be hospitalized. Weerasekara added that they will continue the struggle to abolish SAITM and protect the right of free education, although the government had turned a blind eye on their demands. "SAITM is a fraudulent institution.
We will not allow the government to sell education and hinder the right to free education," he stressed. On 31 January, The Court of Appeal issued a verdict stating that the SAITM Private University in Malabe has the legal authority to award Medical Degrees, and ordered the Sri Lanka Medical Council to take steps to duly register students who obtain the Medical Degree from this institution, as qualified medical practitioners.(Ceylontoday)
