Awards season is now under way and we're starting the new year in style with the Golden Globes ceremony, which takes place on Sunday night in Los Angeles.

Here's everything you need to know about the awards, including details on the nominees and how to follow as the winners are announced.

Who's in the running for the big prizes?
The Golden Globes split some categories between drama and musical/comedy, so there's quite a few movies and stars in the running. Here are the main nominees.

Best film (drama): BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born (pictured below), Black Panther and If Beale Street Could Talk.

Best film (musical or comedy): Crazy Rich Asians, The Favourite, Green Book, Mary Poppins Returns and Vice.

Emily Blunt is Mary Poppins in Dinsey...s original musica MARY. POPPINS RETURNS, a sequel to the 1964 MARY POPPINS which takes audiences on an entirely new adventure with the practically perfect nanny and the Banks family.
Best actress (musical or comedy): Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns (pictured above); Olivia Colman, The Favourite; Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade; Charlize Theron, Tully; Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians.

Best supporting actor: Mahershala Ali, Green Book; Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy; Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman; Richard E Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?; Sam Rockwell, Vice.

Who's presenting?
The ceremony, which also includes awards for TV shows and the programmes' stars, will be hosted by Killing Eve star Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine comedian Andy Samberg (pictured above).

Celebrities presenting awards include nominees Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone, as well as Steve Carell, Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba (pictured), Jamie Lee Curtis, Harrison Ford, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Halle Berry... to name just a few.

British hopes
British actors and actresses have a strong showing in the nominees list.

Emily Blunt is nominated for her reinvention of Mary Poppins, while Olivia Colman (below) is nominated for her role as Queen Anne in historical drama The Favourite, for which Rachel Weisz is also in the running.

Rosamund Pike is on the shortlist for her portrayal of British war correspondent Marie Colvin in A Private War, while Claire Foy gets a nod for her role as the wife of US astronaut Neil Armstrong in First Man.

British actors nominated include Benedict Cumberbatch for Patrick Melrose, based on the novels by Edward St Aubyn, and Hugh Grant for his role in A Very English Scandal - the story of MP Jeremy Thorpe who was accused of conspiring to murder his ex-lover, Norman Scott - both in the best actor in a TV series or film category.

Matthew Rhys is nominated for The Americans, while Richard Madden is also in the running for his role in The Bodyguard (below), which is also nominated for best TV drama series.

The show features a female home secretary and has had positive reviews
Where, when and what time are the awards?
The 76th annual Golden Globes ceremony, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), takes place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, starting at 5pm local time (so 1am on Monday here in the UK).

Who's getting the Cecil B deMille award?
The Cecil B deMille award is given annually to a star who has made a lasting impact on the world of entertainment. Recipients over the years include George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Audrey Hepburn, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Sophia Loren, Sidney Poitier, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, Denzel Washington, Robin Williams, Oprah Winfrey, and lots more.

This year, the prize goes to Golden Globe winner and four-time nominee Jeff Bridges (pictured above), who has been chosen for his work on films including Crazy Heart, The Big Lebowski, True Grit and The Fabulous Baker Boys.

HFPA president Meher Tatna says of Bridges: "The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is delighted to bestow the 2019 Cecil B deMille award on Jeff Bridges.

"Bridges' brilliant body of work across diverse genres has captured the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide for more than six decades.

"We look forward to celebrating 'the Dude' and his remarkable career and philanthropic achievements at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards."
