The objective of the programme is to construct 14,022 houses with one in each Grama Niladhari Division of the country for a low income family. The houses would be granted to the recipients in two months. The recipient is selected not on political affiliations but by a Committee consisting of religious dignitaries, local political representatives, Grama Niladhari, Samurdhi Development Officers, Development Officers, Family Health Officers and community representatives. Priority will be given to families with a disabled breadwinner or widow centric families.
A family consisting of a number of school children with a permanent address and yet without a house would also be eligible for selection.
The progress of construction activities would be reviewed by the Housing Development Authority. This is the first phase of a project under the “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” Policy Statement that guarantees a comfortable house for every family to create a productive and happy citizen in the country.
