Motion filed in SC seeking order for former Speaker to appear in court

A motion was filed in the Supreme Court yesterday by Attorney Moditha Ekanayake, seeking an order for former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to appear in court.

The Motion was filed after Jayasuriya had refused to accept a notice served to him to appear before the SC in relation to the FR petition filed by General Secretary of the Democratic United National Front (DUNF) Ariyawansa Dissanayake seeking an order to direct the EC to refrain from taking steps, including allocation of preference numbers to candidates contesting the upcoming General Election, until final determination of this petition.

The former Speaker has been cited as a Respondent in the case along with EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya, its members include Presidents Counsel N.J. Abeysekara and Prof. S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole, Secretary to the President Dr. P.B. Jayasundara, Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe, and the Attorney General.

Counsel for the DUNF SG informed court that they had visited Jayasuriya’s home to hand over the notice, but he had refused to accept it and requested the court direct him to appear in court.
