Hikkaduwa residents accuse police of beating a 51-year-old woman to death

Residents of the area staged a protest in front of the Hikkaduwa Police Station yesterday (16) alleging that a 51 year old woman in custody had been beaten to death by the police.

The woman, who was arrested on a charge of heroin trafficking, died after being admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital in Galle due to an illness, police said.

However, the protesters who came in front of the police station strongly stated that she had been assaulted by the police officers inside the police station.

A 21-year-old man arrested by the Pugoda Police in a similar manner last week has been charged with assault and murder, and two officers of the Pugoda Police Station have been suspended.

Similar incidents over the past year or so have shown a tendency for the police to commit arbitrary killings under the protection of the authorities, and it goes without saying that this is a very detrimental situation for the survival of a society.
