All political parties must begin preparations for local government elections as Parliament is likely to approve the Bill to amend the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Act No. 22 of 2012, Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister said yesterday.
"A lot of people have been criticizing the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils for the delay in holding local government elections. There were over 50 amendments to be included in the Draft Amendments Bill and we have done the needful. We also informed the Speaker that the Bill can now be presented to Parliament," he said.
The Draft Bill will be presented to Parliament within the next two to three weeks and once it is passed by Parliament there is no reason to postpone the LG elections, Musthapha said. "President Maithripala Sirisena had no reason to postpone the elections. In fact he has continuously requested me to do the needful as soon as possible. The new system will be for the most part a first-past-the-post system. The current administration came to power promising to amend the elections system and to ensure that there is one dedicated elected representative per electorate. We must fulfil this promise," he said.(Ceylon Today)
