Colombo High Court (CHC) Judge Gihan Kulathunga yesterday committed the case, against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and former Director General of the Divi Neguma project Kithsiri Ranawaka, to trial commencing 13 November.
Rajapaksa and Ranawaka have been...... charged, by the Attorney General, with having printed 5 million calendars, with the photo of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, during the run up to the 2015 Presidential Election and hence causing a hefty financial loss to the State, as they had used funds allocated for the Divi Neguma project. Fixing trial for 13 November, the Judge vowed to hear the case on a daily basis, to the best of his ability. When the case was called yesterday, President's Counsel Anil Silva, appearing on behalf of Basil Rajapaksa, told the Court that his client had already filed an appeal in the Court of Appeal concerning a probe conducted by a Special Presidential Commission on the same incident.
Counsel Silva requested the Judge to consider the probe conducted by the SPC, when hearing this case. Judge Kulathunga then said that thus far he was yet to hear anything related to the said case from the Court of Appeal. Afterwards he guaranteed to take up the case in November before issuing notices to the witnesses.(Ceylon Today)
