The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) aims to secure at least 200 LG bodies at the upcoming Local Government Elections, the SLPP's principal strategist, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said yesterday (11).
Briefing the media on the current situation of the SLPP election campaign, Rajapaksa said that according to the information they have, the SLPP is leading the election campaign in seven Provinces, at the moment. He added that both in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the SLPP has been in second place in the election campaigns.
Furthermore, Rajapaksa said that when contesting under the new electoral system, it is essential for the candidates to interact with the general public. Therefore, the Party has advised all its candidates to go to each and every home in their electorate.
"Our candidates are informing us that they get overwhelming responses from the people. Even those who opposed us in past elections are showing an interest in the Party," the former Minister claimed.
He stressed that the Government had failed to fulfill the promises it gave to the general public during the past elections and as a result the people have become frustrated. Therefore, the people who voted for the Government, especially for the United National Party should vote for Pohottuwa (lotus-bud) in the Local Government poll, Rajapaksa added.
