Death threats won’t keep me away from meetings – MR

Death threats won’t keep me away from meetings – MR

Should anyone even hesitantly entertain the idea of my not attending meetings out of a fear of death, then that person is sadly mistaken, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in reference to alleged death threats.

“This is an alarming revelation. This is no one’s fabrication. This was revealed by the CID. There were reports of a similar nature in the past. All of that stopped at the top level and not let out by the Police. Information was not given.

According to the present situation, not only me but my entire family will have to be given security. They can also say that the best place for protection is the prison,” quipped the former President.

The investigations carried out so far with regard to the assassination plot revealed by Namal Kumara and the apprehended Indian national are not at all satisfactory, charged the Joint Opposition (JO).

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) Professor G.L Peiris, said that DIG Nalaka De Silva has not yet been questioned in relation to his alleged involvement in plotting the assassinations. He added that surmises are raised as if the attempts are being taken to cover up the incident.

The Chairman of SLPP, Prof. G. L. Peiris said this at the above Media conference held at the official residence of Rajapaksa yesterday (26).

“As long as the Inspector General is in power, we cannot expect an unbiased investigation. The IG has been summoned by the CID to record a statement”, he added.

He questioned as to how a person who has been summoned to obtain a statement can hold the post of IG. “If it is for someone else, then Nalaka Silva would have been already arrested.

“Why hasn’t action been taken yet? We clearly pointed out that the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s security is not at all sufficient. We also pointed out that not only human resource, but we also lack the equipment and vehicles. He is required to attend several meetings across the country in future. The bullet-proof vehicle provided to the former President is not in good condition”, Prof. Peiris said.
