Chief Opposition Whip and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (9) criticized Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe saying that the latter has no right to request the general public not to import vehicles while he has imported two vehicles worth Rs 300 million just for coming to Parliament from the Temple Trees.
Seconding the Adjournment Motion moved by United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Parliamentarian Dr. Bandula Gunawardena on the current economic crisis in the country, Dissanayake stressed, “According to the Supplementary Estimations, Wickremesinghe imported two luxury vehicles spending approximately Rs 300 million for coming to Parliament from the Temple Trees. Sometimes he uses helicopters to arrive at the Parliament too. In such a situation how can he ask the people not to import vehicles? Doesn’t he have any shame?”
The Government restricts the citizenry from importing vehicles like Maruti Wagon R, but all the Ministers have purchased super luxury vehicles for their use, Dissanayake asserted. “All of such vehicles are worth more than Rs 44 million each. After purchasing super luxury vehicles, now the Government preaches to the people to not buy vehicles. What a joke? You want the people to make sacrifices for the country while you enjoy all the luxuries. You do not have any right to make such requests from the people,” Dissanayake reiterated.
