Gotabaya Rajapaksa doubtful starter in the presidential relay

In the wake of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s announcement on his intention to enter the race of Sri Lanka Presidency as UNP candidate, Civil society organizations called for a moderate leader to defeat the fascist threat of SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa .

More than 40 representatives of civil organizations who met Speaker Karu Jayasuriya noted that the country needs leader who has the ability to restore socio-political and economic stability in the island with international support.

Given the track record of Gotabaya Rajapaksa , he will never be able to archive the wishes of masses although he is always pledging to establish a protected nation (Suraksitha desahayak)

They were of the view that the UNP Presidential candidate should be able unite all powers against the fascist threat emerging under the guise of Gotabaya Rajapaksa who will hit on the final nail in the coffin of democratic freedom.

Gotabaya a double-faced/split personality with bloodlust and his frontline campaign mangers of ex military officials led by murderous Kamal Gunaratne in uniform cannot be ever humanized even if the SLLP wins the Presidential elections, they claimed.

It is surprising to hear Gotabaya now talking about the “grievances” of the North-East people as he had always against “the political solution to ethnic issue and harped on the theme that it was irrelevant after the defeating of the LTTE.

Therefore he will never support minority communities even if he is elected as the President they said adding that he will be a bugbear for Tamils Muslims and Christians living in this country .

The Civil society group noted that the core questions around national identity – issues of devolution of power, of accountability and reconciliation, and of the equal status of Tamils and Muslims in a Sinhala majority state – will remain controversial and decisive factors for Gotabaya’s win or defeat .

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinhe has an edge over Gotabaya Rajapaksa whose popularity is dwindling day by day due to his poor communication skills and arrogant behavior towards journalists.

However UNP deputy leader Sajith Premadsa who has already entered into the race of presidency without waiting for the starting single from party leadership still has a chance to run with Ranil in the relay till he hands over the baton to finish the last lap as the winner, political analyst said.
