President Maithripala Sirisena said that he has delegated powers to all unlike previous Presidents.
The President said the only thing that the former Presidents did not do was to distribute petrol at the fuel stations.
“People are tearing me to pieces these days because of the petrol issue. Several former leaders were part of every decision that was taken and I cannot blame the public for criticising me for every single thing that goes wrong in the country,” he said.
President Sirisena was addressing an event organised to commemorate the second death anniversary commemoration of Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera at the “Ape Gama” in Battaramulla yesterday.
The President said that he is the one who is responsible even if a parent cannot get school admission for a child.
“The government is accountable and has the responsibility to punish the wrongdoers. But we need everybody’s support to do the right thing in the right manner”, he said.
The President said: “Prof. Sarath Wijesooriya said though the country’s Civil Society Organisations played a pivotal role in bringing the Good Governance regime to power, they are disappointed at the manner in which the government is conducting itself. President Sirisena said he fully endorsed the remarks made by Prof. Wijesooriya adding that if they (Prof. Weerasooriya’s remarks) were put to a vote, he would raise both his hands to express his support.
“I cannot speak everything openly but I would not disagree with Prof. Wijesooriya. We came to power by defeating the previous government to usher Good Governance. While criticizing others for their past conduct, we should also make sure that we are performing our tasks in a fair manner,” he said.
