Make MR Premier before 2020

The Joint Opposition challenged SLFP ‘Group 16’ (G16) to show their might by making Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of the country before the 2020 Presidential Election.

Kalutara District JO Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama said that SLFP ‘G16’ has no right to select Presidential candidate for 2020 Election as Rajapaksa and JO would do it.

“The ‘G16’ is always talking about selecting a Presidential candidate and creating broad front against United National Party (UNP). They don’t have any right to talk about our candidate or try to influence us. But, they could do so, if they could make Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister before 2020 Presidential election,” Welgama said.

Meanwhile, party leaders of the Joint Opposition (JO) will meet tomorrow (19) to take crucial decisions regarding Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) – ‘G16’ tomorrow (Tuesday).

Ranjith Soyza, deputy organizer of JO Parliamentary Group said that discussions between JO’s party leaders and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would be held at former President’s official residence at the Wijerama Mawatha and crucial decisions regarding the relationship between JO and SLFP ‘G16’ would be taken there.

“We have various views over the SLFP ‘G16’.  Some of their actions do not match our political agenda. For instance, two days before the deputy speaker’s vote Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle accepted the vice president position of SLFP and S.B. Dissanayake accepted the treasurer position. After the event, they said Maithripala Sirisena should be the next presidential candidate of SLFP. As JO, we can’t accept that. That is why some of our parliamentarians abstained from voting,” he said.

However, he stated that they would work collaboratively with SLFP ‘G16’ in anti-government struggles.
