Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Athhe Gnanasara Thera was released on bail by Homagama Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranathunga yesterday (22).
Bail was set at two sureties in Rs 500,000 and his passport impounded.
Magistrate Ranathunga ordered that the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration be informed of the impounding of the monk’s passport. Gnanasara Thera was sentenced to one year’s rigourous imprisonment to be served in six months on 14 June, after having been convicted with threatening Sandhya Eknaligoda, the wife of missing Journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda within the Homagama Court complex on 25 January, 2016. The monk was charged with violating Sections 346 and 486 of the Penal Code. Lawyers representing the monk filed an appeal, on the very next day (15), challenging the verdict.
The appeal, which was to be taken up on 18 June was postponed to yesterday due to the absence of an official from the Attorney General’s Department.
