Austin Fernando quits

Austin Fernando resigned as the Secretary to the President and bade farewell to his office, a Spokesman for the Presidential Secretariat told Ceylon Today yesterday (5).

Fernando, who was 76 at the time of his resignation, had reportedly told the Presidential Secretariat staff that he had decided to leave the office as he was seeking retirement from the public service.

He had also said that despite constant reminders made to the President since last May, that he would prefer to step down, the President had opposed it.

The former Governor to the Eastern Province was appointed...... to the position in July 2017 following the resignation of the then Secretary to the President, P.B. Abeykoon.

Former Defence Secretary Fernando was a close associate of the President.

President Sirisena appointed Fernando as a Presidential Adviser on 15 January of 2015.

He was thereafter appointed Governor of the Eastern Province on 27 January, 2015. He resigned in order to become Secretary to the President on 1 July, 2017.
