P’ment told no need for additional security for MR for polls

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday shot down a request from the UPFA joint opposition to increase the security of former President, Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapakse during the fourth coming Local Government elections. Comparing the security detail provided for former presidents, the Prime Minister wanted the joint opposition to make a request from the Ministry of Law and Order, to enable a threat assessment based on intelligence reports.


Only 6 compulsory O/L subjects - Akila

Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that in a bid to further improve the quality and standard of the education, the number of compulsory subjects at the General Certificate of Education (O/L) Examination will be confined to six in the future. He added that besides the six compulsory subjects, the rest would be restructured in a realistic and improved manner while carrying out a total revamp of the education sector.


Gazettes pave way for Hambantota Port handover

Gazette notifications on the shareholder agreement on two joint venture entities which will operate commercial and common user facilities respectively at the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port, reached Parliament yesterday prior to handing over of the port this weekend.
